SURFING AMERICA ANNOUNCES TRAVELING PACSUN USA SURF TEAM FOR 2010 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NEW ZEALAND
Development Squad of Twenty Top Athletes Whittled Down to Top Twelve Competitors who will Represent the United States at January's World Championship Event
San Juan Capistrano, Calif. - December 18, 2009 - Surfing America, the National Governing Body for surfing in the United States, is pleased to announce the final selection of the PacSun USA Surf Team for the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. The 2010 ISA Juniors event will take place January 18-28 in Piha, New Zealand.
What started out as a group of the twenty best Under-18 year old surfers in the mainland United States has been streamlined to the 12 who will actually travel and compete in the January event.
Four USA athletes will compete in each of the three divisions: Boys Under 18, Boys Under 16, and Girls Under 18. The 2010 PacSun USA Surf Team is as follows:
Boys Under 18
Conner Coffin
Evan Thompson
Evan Geiselman
Andrew Doheny
Boys Under 16
Kolohe Andino
Jake Halstead
Trevor Thornton
Parker Coffin
Girls Under 18
Courtney Conlogue
Lakey Peterson
Kaleigh Gilchrist
Taylor Pitz
The team participated in four separate training camps in Oceanside, Santa Cruz, Blacks Beach, and Huntington Beach under the watchful eye of Head Coach, Ian "Kanga" Cairns and his assistant Sean Mattison.
"We really focused on beach break surfing which is what we expect to encounter at Piha," said Cairns. And I'm really encouraged with the improvement in everyone's surfing and the positive team atmosphere and camaraderie that we have established through these training camps."
In addition to intense in-water sessions, the team's training was further enhanced by Surfing America's Nutrition and Fitness Development Program spearheaded by Program Director Kevyn Dean MSPT, OCS with the assistance of Andy Schmeiss.
"We weren't sure what we were going to find when we began assessing the foundational fitness or nutritional level of our athletes," said Dean. "But Andy and I were excited to discover that our team was already observing appropriate nutritional guidelines; thanks to the fact that all of the kids still live at home with their parents preparing good meals. Our fitness goal was to target specific needs that have been identified by Kanga during the four training camps. We are moving in a positive direction coming out of the trainings-and we will be ready for the world come January!"
The final recommendations for the team were put forth by Cairns and approved by Surfing America's five-person USA Team Selection Committee, chaired by veteran Mike Parsons.
"We're planning to meet in early January for our fifth team training camp immediately prior to our departure to New Zealand, added Cairns. No Promises, but I think we've got a very strong team in every division."
